The moon can be seen through a high window in the room where Miki plays his piano, as Akio and Touga drive, plotting who will be the next to challenge Utena.

In the light of day a huge crowd is gathered where someone is apparently in danger. Anthy and Utena arrive and see Kozue clinging to the side of the building holding on tightly to something in her arms. Others try to urge her to let go of it and grasp a girl's outstretched arm with both hands, but she is too concerned about whatever she is holding. Miki sees what is going on and she falls, he manages to just barely catch her in his arms (with a little help from Utena).

Now that she is safe, the crowd wonders why she would do something that crazy, when she is usually so cool. Apparently the tree was too be cut down, but as soon as she heard, Kozue climbed right out the window. She was aware of a nest of baby birds and she had climbed to save them.

Miki carries Kozue back to their dorm room while Utena follows with their school bags and Anthy with the nest of birds. He complains, "You're all hot and sticky. Don't lean on me," but she replies that it will be easier on him if she does. Concerned, Utena suggests that Kozue not act to recklessly because she will worry her brother, to which she replies, "My my, brother mine, are you worried about me?" Miki just asks that she not lean on him.

At their residence, Kozue sits in a chair as the others consider the future for the little chicks. "Bringing them home with us was all very well and good, but now what?" Anthy recommends feeding them millet, which she explains how to prepare and the frequency with which they will need to be fed. Miki comments that it will be a lot of work, and Anthy agrees. Utena is please to see both of them talking so much. He is surprised that Anthy has never raised chicks before, considering that she seems to know so much about them, but Anthy replies that it would be best to return them to their parents.

At that moment Kozue gets up and thanks them but says, "…the cute younger sister will tactfully bow out." She goes to a pile of mail and finds a letter from "her," apparently their mother. Utena, who is an orphan, comments that it must be nice to get mail from their mother, but Kozue replies that they don't need parents because they are "wild animals." Miki is annoyed and tells her to quit badmouthing their parents, since they have always been concerned about the twins, but Kozue just snidely remarks that she made get "all serious."

Utena sees a picture of the famed "Sunlit Garden" but finds that it isn't as grand as she expected. It seems desolate and nothing like one would expect from they way Miki seems to feel about it. Anthy comments that it is "a memory, so..." Utena replies, "That's probably true, but I imagined something more..." Neither Anthy nor Akio seem able to figure out exactly what she meant by "more".

At the student council meeting, Juri comments that The Ends of the World is once again sending them letters, and Miki replies that perhaps that is why Saionji, who hated the duels, fought again. Juri is suspicious of Touga, which upsets Nanami, but Miki agrees as well. "Most adults who tell you to do things 'for your own sake' can't be trusted." Nanami takes that as "a motion of no-confidence towards the Ends of the World," and Miki tells her to take it however she wants. He doesn't want to be manipulated by selfish adults and will quit dueling, but Juri tells him not to be too hasty, especially since they don't yet understand Ends of the World.

Later Miki, looking rather sad and wistful, sees a stump where the old tree used to be. He gets a call from his father, who apparently is getting married again. The twins won't be able to attend, but they will send a telegram. For some reason, the person his father is marrying is Anthy in her Rosebride dress. Perhaps this ties into the whole concept of taking what you want before some else does, or perhaps that he distrusts his parents in the same way that he distrusts Ends of the World. Maybe his father is a pedophile. Go figure.

Miki plays the piano in the music room, while his sister wait for someone outside in the light of the moon. Nanami comes up to her and asks about her injuries, to which she replies, "Wild animals heal fast." Nanami than gets pissy about her loitering on school grounds after dark, since only student council members are permitted do to so, but Kozue replies that she is meeting some one, but isn't too specific on who, although the audience knows. She is meeting Akio.
