Miki stands ready to duel with Utena for the sake of the music he had lost, but how had it come to this?

A big music competition was coming up but Miki had decided to drop out of it, much to the disappointment of many, including Nanami. She tells him that he is the pride of the school but sullenly he replies that there is only one song he wishes to play but it is a song for a person with a beautiful heart and he is out of tune. He wishes for someone special to hear the song but it doesn't sound the way he wants. Nanami opens his note book and finds a picture of Himemiya Anthy.

Anthy, however, is not a normal girl and is not very well liked at the school. A small group of Nanami's goons... I mean friends decide to punish her for making Miki drop out of the competition. They hover over Anthy as she lies on the ground holding her face, her cheek still red. Miki intercedes before they can hurt her again, but he feels bad. Kindly he tells her that he is sorry because the girls had assaulted her because of him. Utena sees the pair together and asks her friend who the boy is and Wakaba replies that he is Miki, a piano playing, champion fencing, super genus hotty who is only in the seventh grade.

Miki smiles as he examines a paper, marking with a red pencil. Juri is surprised to see him there, but is pleased that he seems so happy. She notices what he is doing and remarks that he is usually more distant from people. He asks her, "Do you suppose happiness is something close to us, after all?" but she gives him no answer. Instead, she notes that the paper is terrible.

Miki gives the test to Anthy and gives her some helpful suggestions for the retake. Utena remarks that she needs a smart boyfriend to correct her tests and Miki introduces himself to her, though he seems to be very aware of her identity. Utena is surprised to learn that he is a member of the student council and therefore a duelist, though he claims that he will not try to win the Rosebride in a duel. She complains that the duels are a terrible burden that is hurting their scores so Miki guesses that she too must retake the test.

Miki's music is more beautiful than ever and Touga asks him if he has found his shining thing yet and Miki replies that it is possible. He might have recaptured the beauty he had lost in his youth, and Touga replies that he is jealous.

Miki goes to Utena and Anthy's dorm house to help them study, but he is not alone. Nanami steps out from behind him and asks if she can study too, but she has a secret plan to destroy Anthy's reputation. She believes that if she makes Utena and Miki think Anthy is weird they will reject her. Miki and Utena seem to be the only two really interested in studying. Nanami's first plan is to plant a snail in her pencil case but when she opens it she finds that there are already a bunch of snails in the box. Utena already knew they were there and Miki thinks it is cute. Her second plan is to plant a snake in her desk but a mongoose is there and he eats the snake. Utena knew it was there and Miki thinks it is cute. Finally Nanami decides to put a octopus in her closet, but there is already a giant balloon octopus that falls on top of her. Utena knew it was there and Miki thinks it is cute.

Utena finally starts to understand the math problem and tells Miki he is a wonderful tutor. Defeated, Nanami offers them super but Chuchu had already eaten it all and when Anthy offers everyone shaved ice for super, Nanami can't believe it. Miki is shocked that she could be so rude but she insists that shaved ice is bad for her stomach and refuses to eat.

Nanami demands, "Why are you guys so taken with her?!" and Miki asks "Didn't you say you wanted to be her friend?" but Nanami has had enough. She replies that he is the one who likes Anthy and she demands a confession but Anthy has left the room. Utena wonders if she should have made her study and she and Miki go to find her. Suddenly Miki can hear someone playing The Sunny Garden on a piano. When he sees Anthy gracefully poised at the piano he believes he has finally found he shiny thing.
