Miki is a sweet young man who is talented, intelligent, popular, adorable, and plagued by guilt and uncertainty. An image of a shining thing haunts his dreams as he tries desperately to grasp the thin specter of an illusion that was never real.

Miki is a very cute guy with short blue hair and wide, innocent eyes. He is still young so his delicate features have a feminine look to them. His hair hangs down into his eyes which makes him look a bit shy and his ears stick out a little behind his rather large sideburns. His smile is shy but casual and honest unlike the sneers and smirks of many of those who attend Ohtori Academy.

Miki is well known for his intelligence. Although he is only a seventh grader, rumor suggests that he takes college courses. He is able to tutor Utena and Anthy for a very difficult math test which they have to make up. Even Juri, an intelligent person as well, is impressed by the gifted Miki and treats him with a respect she reserves for a small minority.

Besides being smart, Miki is a genius at the piano. At a very young age he began playing piano with his sister who he believed had a talent that rivaled his own although it wasn't true. He plays in all sorts of concerts and he even composed a piece of music "The Sunlit Garden" that became famous. The beautiful, warm piece reflects his own gentle and kind nature, but there is a bitterness to it because it reminds him of his happiest times which he has lost.

Miki fences much like he plays his piano. He posses a grace and style backed with power and pure talent which makes him a dangerous opponent. He is even able to occasionly defeat Juri (the school champion) in a duel. Still, Utena remarks that he belongs behind a piano rather than a sword and Juri agrees. He is much to kind and delicate to be a part of the dirty scheme to bring the world revolution.

A ghost of the past haunts Miki and prevents him from being completely happy. When he was young he enjoyed playing the piano with his sister and he believed that it was her who made the notes sound so perfect. The truth was that she couldn't play very well but he was so good that he compensated for her inability. The illusion was shattered when she was expected to go on stage alone when Miki got sick before their big debut and she refused. Miki blamed himself and mourned the loss of his shiny thing.

The shining thing is always present in this thoughts and when he hears Anthy playing his song, he believes that he had found it again. Even though he hates the idea of winning her like a prize, he is determined to duel Utena so he can protect his precious thing. He fails because the shining thing is not something that can be possessed like a piano or a sword, but what really is this precious thing?
